Domain Names and Branding

How domain names can build & protect your brand.

Get your .COM brand today.
As a small business owner, you're constantly working to build your brand — making sure your company is known for unbeatable quality and remarkable service. While social media websites like Facebook® and Yelp® are valuable tools in helping you establish a stellar reputation, they're no replacement for your own unique domain name.

More than anything, a domain name gives your business a level of professionalism and legitimacy you simply can't get from a social media profile. While the process of domain name registration is easier and more affordable than most people realize, taking the time to register a domain shows a level of commitment and dedication. In short, it shows customers that you're serious about your business.

A domain name also gives you a secret weapon in marketing your business: a domain-based email address, like you@yourcompany.com. What makes this so special? Well, like a domain, it shows a level of professionalism that you can't get from a free email address. But just as importantly, it promotes your brand every time you send a message. Instead of seeing an email from a Gmail™ or Yahoo!® address in their inbox, customers see your company name — and the more they see it, the more they'll remember it.

As a top domain name registrar (and web hosting company), we've helped thousands of customers find success online with the right domain name (or names) — we can do the same for you. When customers want to find a business, whether it's a local restaurant or a global retailer, the Web is the first place they look. Domain names not only make it easy for customers to find your business on the Web, they also give you a place where you can create your own unique online presence, from a full-blown Web store to a simple online business card with your contact information, hours and location.
How you choose your domain name depends on where you are with your business. If you're already up and running with a brick-&-mortar location, you'll want to choose a domain that matches your business name. You've worked hard to create a name and a brand that customers know and love, so you having the matching domain only makes sense for your customers. Here are 10 great tips for helping you choose your domain name.
Of course, if you have a popular name (like AAA Plumbing), your first choice may not be available. If that's the case, don't worry — there are virtually endless domain variations available. Try a different domain extension like .NET, .BIZ or .CO instead of just .COM. Another tip is to add a local element to your name, such as AAAPlumbingAZ.com. This not only differentiates your business from others that may be located across the country, it can help improve your search engine results for local customers.
If you're just starting out — or you're launching a business that will only exist online — choosing your domain name is essentially choosing your company name. You want a name that's memorable and represents your business, if not literally, then at least your company's personality or attitude (think WebWeWeave.net).
And all businesses, new and established, can benefit from a few best practices when it comes to choosing a domain, such as making your name easy to spell and keeping it short.

10 Great Tips in Choosing the Right Domain Name

Get Your Domain Name Now
If you've never done it before, choosing a domain name can be an intimidating experience. What do we look for, what's the best name, how do I come up with ideas? All great questions as choosing the right domain name requires a lot of thought and consideration. Your domain name is a large part of your corporate identity; so you want to make sure you choose the right domain name that is easy to find and promote from Web We Weave. Follow these 10 simple steps below to help you pick the perfect domain.

1. Act Fast
Domain names sell quickly, and while it's difficult to find the perfect .COM, with creativity you can find that perfect domain. The good thing, they're also inexpensive, so register your favorite domain names as soon as possible. If you’re having trouble finding an available name, domain registrars like Web We Weave will suggest alternate names during your domain search to help you find the perfect name.

2. Keep it Short
If your domain name is long and complex, you risk customers mistyping or misspelling it. Short and simple is the way to go. A few strokes of the keypad on both computer and smartphone make it so much easier to type.

3. Make it Easy to Type
Finding a domain name that's easy to type is critical to online success. If you use slang (u instead of you) or words with multiple spellings (express vs. xpress), it may be harder for customers to find your site.

4. Use Keywords
Try using keywords that describe your business and the services you offer. For example; if you’re a glass replacement business, you may want to register GlassRepair.com or GlassReplacement.com. Include the keywords that people enter when searching for your products or services. It helps improve your rank on search engines (which increases traffic) and just makes more sense to your customers.

5. Target Your Area
If your business is local, consider including your city or state in your domain name to make it easy for local customers to find and remember. Example: OldTownTavernAZ.com.

6. Avoid Numbers and Hyphens
Numbers and hyphens are often misunderstood — people who hear your website address don't know if you're using a numeral (5) or it's spelled out (five) or they misplace or forget the dash. If you need these in your domain, register the different variations to be safe (i.e. highfivesports.com and high5sports.com.).

7. Be Memorable
There are millions of registered domain names, so having a domain that's catchy and memorable is essential. Once you've come up with a name, share it with close friends to make sure it sounds appealing and makes sense to others.

Quick Solution: Got a great idea for a domain? Register your name today and put a website out there before someone else beats you to it.

8. Research It
Make sure the name you've selected isn't trademarked, copyrighted or being used by another company. It could result in a huge legal mess that could cost you a fortune, as well as your domain!

9. Use an Appropriate Domain Name Extension
Extensions are suffixes, such as .COM or .NET, at the end of Web addresses. These can have specific uses, so make sure to choose one that works for your business. .COM is far and away the most popular, but here are some other top extensions and how they're often used:
.co : an abbreviation for company, commerce, and community
.info : informational sites
.net : technical, Internet infrastructure sites
.org : non-commercial organizations and non-profits
.biz : business or commercial use, like ecommerce sites
.me : blogs, resumes or personal sites

Tip: You don't need to build a website for every domain. Just forward any additional domains to your primary website.

10. Protect and Build Your Brand
To protect your brand, you should purchase various domain extensions, as well as misspelled versions of your domain name. This prevents competitors from registering other versions and ensures your customers are directed to your website, even if they mistype it.
